Compton Hall and Powerhouse
Named for: Alfred E. Compton (Class of 1853)
Architect: George Browne Post Erected: 1903-1907

 

In the 1870s Professor Compton established the Mechanical Arts Course which laid the foundation for the College’s School of Engineering. The smokestack (St. Nicholas Tower) is a reminder that the College produced its own electricity until 1954. The rear of the plate is labeled “Saint Nicholas Tower. ”

 

Original Use: The building housed the Technology program, later the School of Engineering.


Current Use: The building now houses the Department of Art.
