Shepard, Harris, Baskerville, Wingate and Compton Halls were conceived by Post as a comprehensive unified approach to campus planning and design in the Gothic style. The grey stone is Manhattan schist, excavated during the building of the Broadway IRT subway line. The decorative elements, including grotesques and gargoyles, are of white terracotta. The rear of the plate is labeled “The Main Building from St. Nicholas Avenue.”
